SUMMARY:Raffle Tickets for Jung's The Red Book
DESCRIPTION:Donice Wooster was an angel who served JACO\, First Community Church\, First Congregational Church and Apple Farms. Her gifts to us all were legendary and sadly she died this past November. One of her treasures was a copy of Jung’s exquisite Red Book\, which she has bequeathed as a fund-raiser. She wanted someone else to marvel at it\, to hold it and behold it and she wanted it to be a means of providing an infusion of financial support to JACO. Scroll down to purchase tickets. They are $5 each (so be sure also to select the quantity you want) and for a bonus\, you can buy  a packet of 5 tickets for $20 (so be sure to indicate the number of packets you want to buy). When you purchase your ticket(s) we will email you your ticket number(s). We’ll have the drawing on April 23\, when Dr. Sweeney is presenting his Bauza program\, which pays tribute to our beloved friend.

SUMMARY:Animus – Anima: A Jungian Reset? – Presented by JACO Members Mary Marx and John Schuster
DESCRIPTION:C G Jung has been credited largely with the concept that men have an inner feminine and women have an inner masculine (i.e.\, the contrasexual self) which allows all people access to both gendered energies. The cultural limits of Jung’s life have created confusion for people working with and studying his writing for decades\, and the non-binary choices that now exist go way beyond anything Jung saw in his time. Susan Rowland’s work on Jung and gender make an important contribution here. This session is a forum for discussion of anima and animus in a contemporary context. \nMary Marx taught English classes on myth and folktales at Chatfield College. She holds master’s degrees from UC and Pacifica Graduate Institute. She is past OLLI moderator of Myth and Symbols in Mary Renault’s The King Must Die\, and Seamus Heaney’s Sweeney Astray (with R. Shanklin). \nJohn teaches leadership coaching at Columbia University. He has an MA in literature and an MA in psychology. He is co-author of The Power of Open-book Management and author of Answering Your Call: A Guide to Living Your Deepest Purpose as well as The Power of Your Past: The Art of Recalling\, Recasting\, and Reclaiming. In 2018\, John launched a podcast about aging with intention called Stories for the Ages on NPR. \n

SUMMARY:Observations on Jung\, Religion\, and Spirituality\, With Rev. David Hett
DESCRIPTION:Rev. David Hett’s December program was so outstanding that the participants importuned him to present a follow-on. His material was so rich\, deeply informed by diverse scholarly resources\, that he said he easily could offer us more. He truly held everyone spellbound with his knowledge\, humor\, and engaging personality. Because we are unable to bring Dr. Fanny Brewster and Dr\, Karen Naifeh in January as hoped\, we have scheduled David for the January Second Saturday. It will be a free program\, though the omicron variant of covid has necessitated its being a Zoom delivery. Thus it’s really important for you to RSVP (scroll down) in order to receive your zoom link. In order to get the link in time\, RSVP NO LATER THAN 9 AM SATURDAY JANUARY 8. \nThe C. G. Jung Association of Central Ohio (JACO) grew initially out of depth psychology groups begun at First Community some 40 years ago. We have asked Rev. David Hett\, Dean of The Burkhart Center\, to present the January “Second Saturday” program\, on the topic of Carl Jung’s (and followers) perspectives on religion and spirituality. Dr. Jung was the son and grandson of Protestant ministers and so brings much perspective on Christianity into his psychological work\, as one of the preeminent founders of the depth psychology movement in the 20th century. \nRev. Hett\, clergy member of First Community\, has been a student of depth psychologist Carl Jung\, and served for years on the JACO board of directors\, and will bring his own insights into the interplay of Jungian thought and practice with Christian religious concepts particularly. With no claims to be an expert on Jungian psychology\, he will\, with his more extensive background in psychological-spiritual work\, present observations on spirituality\, psychology\, and practice that foster personal growth and integration of personality and essence\, of the human with the divine qualities of our true nature. \n

SUMMARY:Understanding Self and Others Through Carl Jung's Theory of Psychological Types\, Presented by Stephen Weed
DESCRIPTION:This is a free JACO Second Saturday Program. More Please RSVP below to receive a zoom link. Click here for a preview. \nCarl Jung’s theory of Psychological Type posits that each of us has a preferred primary or principal mental function that focuses and filters our understanding of the world.  In this workshop\, we will examine the 6 basic components that comprise this dominant mental function and give structure to each of his 8 psychological types. \nJung’s first distinction is between the two Attitude-Types of the Extraverted Type and the Introverted Type as a function of whether one’s energy is drawn to engage with objects in the outer world (Extraverted)\, or whether one’s energy tends to withdraw or disengage from objects in the objective world and focus on the inward\, subjective impression within ourselves (Introverted). \nOnce we’ve established our preferred Attitude-Types\, we will examine Jung’s descriptions of the four Function-Types – Thinking\, Feeling\, Sensation\, and Intuition – and discuss how we may resonate with and employ each in everyday situations.  Then we will look at how each of these Function-Types combines with each of the Attitude-Types to create 8 distinctive conscious orientations that characterize separate psychological types when differentiated into a dominant or principal function. \nLastly\, in conversation as a group\, we will share experiences and insights and develop some takeaway points for each of Jung’s 8 dominant functions. \nStephen T. Weed MS is a member of the C.G. Jung Association of Central Ohio and has presented on Jung’s Theory of Psychological Types at several Second Saturday gatherings since 2013.  Stephen is a certified MBTI Master Practitioner and has worked with clients and students employing the 16 Myers-Briggs Personality Types in individual and small-group settings since 1996. \nAs a founding member of the teaching team at Relational Care Associates\, LLC\, Stephen created and facilitated personality type workshops consisting of 18 weeks of introductory\, intermediate\, and advanced level courses\, including topics such as: Jungian Functions and Personality Type; Beebe’s Jungian Archetypes and Psychological Type; Emotional Intelligence; and David Keirsey’s Temperament Theory. \nStephen has worked or volunteered with a number of local non-profit organizations over the past 20 years\, including the Friends of WOSU Public Media\, Short North SID\, St. Joseph Montessori School\, CCAD\, and the Susan Scherer Charitable Foundation.  He is currently a board member with JACO and with North Central Mental Health Services.

SUMMARY:Bollingen Workshop: Human Dilemmas and the Everyday Truths of Folk Tales
DESCRIPTION:rosenbarger flier 3\n \nAccording to the renowned Jungian analyst and scholar\, Marie Louise von Franz\, “since fairy tales through the world disclose certain common themes and structures\, we may assume that they spring from the most universal substrate of the human psyche.”  It is for this reason that fairy and folk tales portray frequent human dilemmas\, the situations that give rise to them\, and paths toward their resolution.  Faced as we are at this time in our lives with serious personal\, cultural and global conflicts\, the everyday truths of fairy tales can offer us much needed wisdom and guidance.  In this weekend program we will rely upon some of these tales to focus our attention on the archetypal or universal patterns\, symbols and energies that are emerging today.  Our hope is that this access to the symbolic meaning of folk tales will enable us to participate in a more conscious and responsible way in our personal and cultural lives.  Hopefully\, it will also illustrate the usefulness of a symbolic\, psychodynamic view of these tales for psychotherapeutic work.\n In our Saturday workshop we will discuss a western tale that again shows us a typical mundane problem and how a heroine finds her way to survival and homecoming after her journey through a magical realm. In effect\, we will be probing the often subtle challenges that present themselves to us in initially unseen ways.   There will be time for discussion and exploration of the symbols and development in this tale\, with special focus on where we see these same patterns in our current everyday lives. \nMara-Lea Rosenbarger is a Jungian Analyst\, with the Diploma from The C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich. She has a private practice in Bloomington\, IN and conducts on-going reading groups studying the works of Jung and Marie Louise von Franz as well as other writers\, including modern novels. She has spent many years working in the public schools as an elementary teacher\, a Reading Specialist\, and as an Instructional and Literacy Coach. She is currently an Adjunct Faculty member at Indiana University in The School of Education. She is particularly interested in modern and not so modern fiction and how these writers revive and re-enliven the universal patterns that are so efficiently and elementally expressed in folk tales\, making this great body of \nhuman experience accessible to so many of us in so many ways.

SUMMARY:Dreams\, Fantasy\, and Art-Making: Revealing The Archetypal Themes Guiding Our Lives - A Second Saturday with Maggi Colwell\, MS Art Therapy
DESCRIPTION:This will be a Zoom program that is free. However\, to receive the Zoom link\, please RSVP below. We very much hope to see you.  \n“My speech is imperfect. Not because I want to shine with words\, but out of the impossibility of finding those words\, I speak in images. With nothing else to express the words from the depths.”        ~Carl Jung\, “The Red Book” \nBefore we thought in words\, we perceived our reality in images.  Whether in dreams\, fantasy\, or art making\, we image-ine our worlds and ourselves through images.  Images hint and reveal the archetypal themes guiding our lives.  In art therapy\, images guide our conscious mind to attune with the inner workings of the unfolding of the Self. \nMaggi will discuss how images give us clues to the archetypal workings in our lives through dreams and art therapy.  They will lead us in an art therapy exercise for engaging in dialog with your own images. \nMaterials needed:  paper and drawing materials (may be pen\, pencil\, highlighters\, markers\, etc.) No artistic talent necessary! \nMaggi Colwell is an art therapist in private practice in Columbus.  They offer art therapy\, dream groups\, and dream pattern\nanalysis.  https://columbusarttherapy.com. They have a MS in art therapy from Florida State University and a masters level dream pattern analysis certificate from the Assisi Institute.

SUMMARY:“The Soul's Twins - Emancipate Your Feminine and Masculine Archetypes” - Presented by Dr. Jean Raffa
DESCRIPTION:WE HAVE A SPECIAL PROGRAM FOR YOU! ON JUNE 12 JACO IS HOSTING A RECENT AWARD WINNING AUTHOR TO GUIDE US THROUGH HER PARTNERSHIP PROFILE AND A DISCUSSION OF JUNGIAN ARCHETYPES. \nTo receive her Partnership Assessment Profile\, RSVP below. She will discuss results during the second half of the program.  \nOUR GUEST JUNE IS DR. JEAN RAFFA \nDr. Raffa recently published “The Soul’s Twins – Emancipate Your Feminine and Masculine Archetypes” \nThis is the description of her book from the Nautilus Award press release: \nHumanity today is plagued by a loss of meaning and alienation from self and others. The result is unprecedented levels of divorce\, depression\, anxiety\, addictions\, suicide\, and crime. Because societal institutions have failed to resolve these and other everyday problems\, it is now the task of each individual to heal and unite their divided self: body and spirit\, conscious and unconscious\, feminine and masculine. Drawing on Jungian psychology and wisdom traditions from world religions\, Dr. Raffa offers a self-guided journey to heightened self-awareness and compassion for oneself and others. A self-assessment tool called the Partnership Profile gives readers a personalized status report on their inner forces\, including the maturity of four feminine archetypes\, four masculine archetypes\, and a newly emerging archetype of egalitarian partnership. This awareness\, combined with suggested practices\, empowers readers to address their imbalances and create the lives for which they yearn. \nA former television producer and college professor\, Dr. Raffa changed directions in midlife to discover and write about her passions. Informed by over 30 years of psychological and spiritual study\, her books and teachings guide others to growth and self-empowerment.

One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light\, but by making the darkness conscious.”  Carl Jung\, Psychology and Alchemy          It is the stranger who knocks on the door.  Its terrifying features are proportionate to the degree to which its meaning has been exiled\, and we are frightened because we know that its entrance and effects on our life will create a psychic dis-equilibrium.  So we wash our hands\, lock the doors\, and do whatever is possible to keep these contents far away from our life — or so goes the illusion. The stranger\, this creative unconscious\, will not be silenced or muted by conscious intent. Ultimately\, the unconscious will have its say\, because The Self understands that we cannot live a meaningful life with such vital aspects of Psyche in exile. Welcoming the stranger is an important feature both in psychological development and in the treatment of trauma. We need to know the stranger at the door\, and often are surprised to learn its identity. From myth\, fairy tale\, and opera we hear of these life altering encounters with Self\, which allow us to recognize the painful reality of how our traumas and fears have constrained our life\, while also asking what is needed to move beyond the contours of our possessions. \nDr. Michael Conforti is a Jungian analyst and the Founder and Director of the Assisi Institute. He is a faculty member at the C.G. Jung Institute – Boston\, the C.G Jung Foundation of New York\, and for many years served as a Senior Associate faculty member in the Doctoral and Master’s Programs in Clinical Psychology at Antioch New England. A pioneer in the field of matter-psyche studies\, Dr. Conforti is actively investigating the workings of archetypal fields and the relationship between Jungian psychology and the New Sciences. He has presented his work to a wide range of national and international audiences\, including the C.G. Jung Institute – Zurich and Jungian organizations in Australia\, Canada\, Colombia\, Denmark\, Ecuador\, Italy\, Russia\, Switzerland\, and Venezuela. He is the author of Threshold Experiences: The Archetype of Beginnings (2007) and Field\, Form and Fate: Patterns in Mind\, Nature and Psyche (2002). His articles have appeared in Psychological Perspectives\, San Francisco Jung Library Journal\, Roundtable Press\, World Futures: The Journal of General Evolution\, and Spring Journal\, and his books has been translated into Italian\, Russian and a soon to be released Spanish edition of his work. \n

SUMMARY:The Claire Hagan Bauza Lecture Presented by Dr. Michael Conforti: The Confluence of Psyche\, Matter and Soul in Art\, Story\, and Contemporary Life. Friday April 16 and Saturday April 17. THE FRIDAY PROGRAM IS THE MIRACLE OF MARCELLINO: PANE E VINO (THE BOY WHO FED THE CRUCIFIX)
DESCRIPTION:The registration fee for members is $25 Friday and $35 Saturday or $50 both days. The registration fee for non-members is $30 Friday and $40 Saturday or $60 both days. CEUs are available: 1.5 for Friday and 2.5 for Saturday. These are free to members (just complete the RSVP below) and cost $10 each day for non-members. You must register by noon Thursday April 15.  A Zoom link will be sent to each registrant. Scroll down below for tickets.   \nFriday – THE MIRACLE OF MARCELLINO: PANE E VINO (THE BOY WHO FED THE CRUCIFIX)   \nThis fairy tale is the story of a young boy who enters a church for the first time and sees a man\, alone\, naked\, hanging on a cross. The boy’s compassion allows him to see that this man must be hungry\, thirsty\, and lonely\, so he begins to talk to him\, feeds him a bowl of pasta\, offers him a glass of wine\, and longs to bring him comfort. Reminding us of the transformative potential of fairy tales\, this beautiful and difficult story illustrates how even when so many of us forget the reality of a living spirit\, the numinous is ever present; indeed\, the psyche and the divine are embedded within the world’s religious and spiritual traditions.  The movie entitled “The Miracle of Marcelino” is based on this story. SUMMARY:Slideshow from a March 13\, 2001 Second Saturday Exploration of the Enneagram Presented by Dr. Belinda Gore
DESCRIPTION:THOUGH THE DATE FOR THIS PROGRAM HAS PASSED (IT WAS SATURDAY MARCH 13)\, DR. BELINDA GORE IS MAKING AVAILABLE FOR A TIME\, THE POWERPOINT SLIDES OF HER PRESENTATION: A Second Saturday Exploration of the Enneagram – scroll to the end of the following descriptive information to access the slideshow. \nYou may visit the Enneagram Institute web site (https://www.enneagraminstitute.com/) where you can take a questionnaire for $12.  You will get pages of information when the results are returned to you by the Institute (almost immediately). \nWhat is the Enneagram? The Enneagram is a map of personality types and a dynamic description of how personality develops. The name\, Enneagram\, has its origin in the Greek words “ennea” related to nine and gram meaning “a model.” The Enneagram symbol is a circle with nine equidistant points around the circumference.  These points identify nine personality type structures that are archetypal\, relevant to all people. Dr. Gore discussed the enneagram types as nine ways of balancing the three Centers of Intelligence from Gurdjieff’s teaching: the Belly or Moving Center\, the Heart or Feeling Center\, and the Head or Thinking Center. \nBelinda’s focus is teaching and guiding practices for living the awakened life.  In coaching\, workshops\, and yearlong trainings her work brings together the Enneagram\, the practice of Presence\, Ancient Ritual Postures\, and art as an expression of the personal and collective spiritual journey. Belinda is an inspired teacher as well as a psychologist\, a coach\, and an artist.  The basis of her spiritual teaching is a practice that uses ancient ritual postures from the artwork of indigenous people around the world to access the world of spirit.  It is the subject of two of her books and much of her art.  She is also an expert in the Enneagram\, teaching workshops internationally and virtual courses online.   Her area of special interest is the development of personality through relationships as understood through Object Relations theory.  Belinda is also a partner and senior faculty with The Deep Coaching Institute\, a coaching school that trains coaches to use the Enneagram and a methodology based on somatic awareness and deep acceptance.  The Deep Coaching approach guides clients in becoming more present and thereby experiencing Presence\, the basis of the awakened life. \nBelinda Gore Enneagram Slides \n

SUMMARY:Some Thoughts on Technology as Shadow by Dr. Doug Tyler
DESCRIPTION:We are sorry but registration for this program has closed. \n“Always when science tries to describe a “simple” life process\, the matter becomes complicated and difficult.” —C.G. Jung \nTechnologies have become “necessary” tools for ego development (for individuals\, companies\, organizations\, or institutions) by mirroring needs and desires in order to feel known and remembered. And very few of us reside outside the realm of this powerful influence. So\, what are we to make of this process by which the ego and its attendant aspirations become drawn into such a powerful archetypal force? We continuously hear about or experience the benefits and the ease of locating information and communicating with others. What is missing\, however\, is a dialogue about technology as shadow. \nThere is no doubt our lives are enhanced by powerful emerging technologies and that these developments reflect a level of influence consistent with archetypal meaning. Unless we become conscious of the shadow working within the uses of our technological wonders\, we will grow increasingly estranged in our relationships with our selves\, each other\, and the psyche. A preoccupation with technology and its effects on consciousness will result in an unconscious undertow of sorts—dragging us out to sea\, into a reckoning with the psyche’s intentions. \nDr. Tyler practices as a Jungian Analyst in Knoxville\, TN. He obtained his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee and his diploma in Analytical Psychology from the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts (IRSJA). He is a member of the IRSJA and is currently a training analyst with the Inter-Regional Memphis-Atlanta Seminar. Dr. Tyler has been a practicing psychologist for 25 years in Knoxville and lectures on various Jungian topics\, including: Typology\, the Holy Grail\, the Hero archetype\, the intersection of psychology and theology\, and Merlin as multifaceted archetypal images.

SUMMARY:Jung\, Astrology\, and the Star of Bethlehem - Presented by Dr. Jay Young
DESCRIPTION:Because this is a Zoom event we ask that you purchase your ticket by noon December 18 so that we can the link to you in time. Scroll down to purchase ticket. Member price applies to members of JACO\, First Community\, First Congregational\, King Avenue Methodist and Unitarian Universalist \nFor two thousand years Christians have puzzled over the mystery of the Star of Bethlehem\, mentioned only in the Gospel of Matthew and seen only by “Magi” arriving unexpectedly in Jerusalem with a startling question: “Where is he that is born King of the Jews?” Contemporary scholars believe the Magi were respected Persian astrologers – advisors to royalty – who recognized a truly magnificent astrological portent. While the Star may have been a myth or miracle\, we will attempt to unravel its mystery from the astrological and astronomical perspective of a “Wise Man” alive at the time of Jesus’ birth. Additionally\, the unfolding story of the nativity will be connected to Jung’s notion of synchronicity and the archetypes. \n“The starry vault of heaven is in truth the open book of cosmic projection\, in which are reflected the archetypes. In this vision\, astrology and alchemy are the two classical functionaries of the psychology of the collective unconscious.” – C.G. Jung \nJoin Dr. Jay Young\, former Ohio Dominican University faculty member\, clinical counselor and a lifelong avid amateur astronomer\, on a unique journey that will forever change the way you view the holiday nighttime sky. \n

Practical examples and suggestions will be offered along with opportunity for participant discussion.

SUMMARY:Encountering the Other: The White Shadow - A Talk with Karen Naifeh\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:There is no charge for this program but please email jungaco@jungcentralohio.org by August 20 so that we can get back in touch with you to provide the zoom link to participate. \nHow can we who identify as White learn to recognize the myriad things we do – often unconsciously – that are offensive to people of African heritage\, Native Americans\, and other People of Color.  As members of the dominant group in our society we have learned not to see embedded forms of racism and oppression in our attitudes\, conversation\, and general behavior. In order to make lasting change\, we are challenged to understand what forces keep unconscious racial bias alive and active. One answer lies in the concept of a Cultural Shadow\, in this case the White Shadow in American society. \nThis presentation by Dr. Naifeh will draw on writings of Jung and post-Jungian writers such as Kimbles\, Singer and Brewster\, as well as examples from philosophy\, relational psychoanalysis\, film and literature to depict the Cultural Shadow.  In one of his 1925 lectures Jung diagrammed the geology of the personality.  Post-Jungian writers have connected the Cultural Shadow with archetypal evil and the formation of negative cultural complexes.  An  exploration of this powerful connection can lead us to new ways of understanding how the sense of Other is created and maintained in the psyche\, thereby revealing ways for us to bring the Cultural Shadow into consciousness. \nDr. Naifeh’s talk will include dialogue about how to recognize how the Cultural Shadow impacts us personally and practical ways to deal with it. \nDr. Naifeh is co-chair of the ad hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusivity and an analyst member of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco. She holds doctorate degrees in medical physiology and in clinical psychology. She teaches candidates in the GCJISF’s analytic training program and clinic internship program and supervises doctoral interns in the Institute Clinic. She is a clinical supervisor at the Women’s Therapy Center in Berkeley. \nDr. Karen Naifeh Talk on the White Shadow

SUMMARY:The Racial Complex: A Conversation on Racism\, Shadow and the Personal Unconscious - A Talk with Fanny Brewster\, Ph.D.\, M.F.A
DESCRIPTION:This is a free Zoom based program but please email JACO at\njungaco@jungcentralohio.org\nby Thursday July 9  so that we can get back in touch with you to provide the Zoom link to participate. \nJust as the coloured man lives in your cities and even within your houses\, so also he lives under your skin\, subconsciously.  Naturally it works both ways.  Just as every Jew has a Christ complex\, so every Negro has a white complex and every American (white) a Negro complex.\nC.G. Jung Collected Works\, Vol. 10\, para 963 \nWhen we open the door of Jungian psychology\, crossing the threshold to meet our racial complexes\, the best way to proceed is gently. As our collective engages and struggles with issues of mortality\, violence and racial relations\, we are all affected in the most profound ways.  Talking with one another\, the hallmark of depth psychology\, has always been a path to considerations of healing and wholeness.  It can also teach us more about compassion as we begin to understand the human narrative of those we consider “Other”.  Let us talk to one another in a way that opens our hearts\, our deeper selves connected to personal racial complexes\, and archetypal energies. Let us spend time together investigating what we desire to learn\, engaging our ego and our unconscious shadowed selves\, and releasing our fears in service of deepening consciousness. \nDr. Brewster is a Jungian analyst and Professor of Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute.  She is a writer of nonfiction including African Americans and Jungian Psychology: Leaving the Shadows ((Routledge\, 2017)\, Archetypal Grief:  Slavery’s Legacy of Intergenerational Child Loss (Routledge\, 2018) and The Racial Complex:  A Jungian Perspective on Culture and Race. (Routledge\, 2019) Her poems have been published in Psychological Perspectives Journal where she was the Featured Poet as well as in other journals. Dr. Brewster is a lecturer and workshop presenter on Jungian related topics that address American Culture\, Diversity and Creativity.  She is a faculty member at the New York C.G. Jung Foundation and an analyst member with the Philadelphia Association of Jungian Analysts. She has received two Gradiva Award nominations for her writing from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis.
