SUMMARY:Are We Listening? Dream Messages We Receive to Guide Us Through Personal and World Disquiet\, Presented by Jungian Analyst Janice Bachman
DESCRIPTION:This is both an in-person and Zoom program. We hope to see you in-person but we will be delighted to see you virtually as well! To receive a Zoom link\, please RSVP below\, by 9 am on the 12th though\, so that we can get it to you in time. If you plan to attend in-person\, please do RSVP below as well. That will be very helpful to us as we plan space and refreshments. There are two RSVP options – one for Zoom and one for in-person. Thank you! This is a free program. However\, a donation of $10 – $15 would be deeply appreciated.  https://www.jungcentralohio.org/donate/\nBut please do not let this suggested donation keep you from coming. You will be welcomed with all our heart. \nSpiritual Director and Jungian Analyst\, Janice Bachman\, O.P. will lead an exploration of dream work as a source for insight and deeper self-understanding. She will share practices of listening and learning from the language of dreams that provide wisdom and enrichment for our waking life. We will look at the archetypal nature of symbols and their meaning to learn the art of translating dream messages into a language we can understand and meaningfully bring into our lives. Dreams are unique gifts given to each of us. Dreams connect us to a source of wisdom beyond the ego and can heal and guide us on our journey to become more whole persons. In this program we will discuss classical elements of Jungian dream work and situate this content within the larger arena of world events\, the collective unconscious\, individual psychological development and spiritual growth. \nJanice is on the summer faculty at Creighton University\, Omaha\, NE\, where she teaches in the Graduate Program in Christian Spirituality. She holds a masters’ degree in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University\, a diploma in Analytical Psychology from the Ontario Association of Jungian Analysts (Toronto)\, and an MBA from Xavier University\, Cincinnati.

SUMMARY:The 2022 Bollingen Workshop with Dr. Stan Marlan: Jung\, Alchemy\, Transformation\, and Individuation
DESCRIPTION:The following information covers the October 14 Friday evening lecture AND the October 15 Saturday workshop. Scroll below to register\, please. You will find tickets listed for the Fri Lecture; for the Sat Workshop; for both Fri & Sat (discounted)\, as well as for CEU’s\, all noted for member and non-member applicability. The location will be First Community Church\, North Campus\, 3777 Dublin Rd.\, Columbus\, Ohio 43221. Thank you. \nCarl Jung’s interest in alchemy came to him in 1928 after he had read The Secret of the Golden Flower\, a book on Chinese meditation and alchemy from the late Tang dynasty (618–907). By the time he read the book Jung had been investigating the processes of the collective unconscious for 15 years.  The book’s trope suggests the opening of consciousness to light—the journey through darkness\, transformation\, and transcendence. For the first time\, Jung felt that he was on the right track in finding the “long-sought connecting link between Gnosis and the processes of the collective unconscious that can be observed in modern man.” (CW 20\, Alchemical Studies\, p.4).  Our presenter\, Stan Marlan\, recognizes that a ‘linking of light and darkness sets the stage for a fundamental and recurring theme in both alchemy and Jungian psychology” —the unity of opposites.  And that “[w]hen these tensions are held together\, they catalyze a symbol-making process that produces complex archetypal images that exceed rational categories” and lead toward wholeness. (Marlan\, C.J. Jung and the Alchemical Imagination\, p.2). \nOn Friday evening\, Marlan will introduce the audience to Jung’s alchemical world—why it was so important to Jung\, alchemy’s basic concepts and symbolism\, and how it functions as a metaphor for individuation.  At the workshop on Saturday\, he will continue to build upon these concepts and explore the mysterious goal of the alchemical process—the Philosopher’s Stone. He will incorporate the teachings of individuals such as Edward Edinger\, Marie Louise von Franz\, and James Hillman as a means of developing our understanding of Jung’s alchemical teachings; how images function in a very particular way; and\, how alchemical concepts such as fire and heat can relate to the care of our own psychic wounds. Marlan will illustrate alchemical teachings using case material and dreams. He will also engage participants in discussion of their questions and comments.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday With Artist Jim Slouffman: Jungian Psychology Through an Artist's Lens
DESCRIPTION:Jim will discuss Jungian psychology through the lens of his experience as an artist. Several years ago Jung Currents featured musings on the Cosmic Egg/the World egg\, at which time Jim was inspired to write the following lyrical words that are a great introduction to his soaring spirit: \n“Oh cosmic egg progenitor of all\, your eternal roundness speaks of the round thing\, the oneness of the universe. Endless light wraps your curves. Whiteness – Darkness When your shadow eclipses worlds we shudder\, gather in community and sing incantations of redemptive love. OM \nWhen you are opened the great flame rises to the endless heavens freeing the tongues of prophetic fire to speak!” \nThough this is a free Zoom program\,  we ask that you RSVP below please. Getting an idea of the number of participants will help Jim plan his format. Thank you!

SUMMARY:The I Ching as Conversational Partner\, with JACO Member Jeanne Marlowe
DESCRIPTION:Because this will be an in-person event and we need to reserve space\, it would be immensely helpful if you would RSP below\, please. Thank you! \nFor important decisions\, sorting priorities\, puzzling dreams\, learn an easy\, wise way to consult the I Ching and move toward Tao – the union\, dissolution\, and reintegration of opposites. A few minutes of writing your deep thoughts and feelings about an emotional issue helps you ask the right questions. Hear examples from Jung\, John Beebe’s Integrity in Depth\, and Nathan Schwartz-Salant’s The Order-Disorder Paradox. Bring your questions and experience\, especially an I Ching response that became important in your life. \n  \nJeanne journaled over 400 I Ching queries over the past 29 years and felt enriched by every response. She will bring her Workbook compiling results for each of the 64 hexagrams – yes\, she’s received all 64. She thrives on small group dialogue and currently leads a monthly writing group\, open to all\, at the Columbus Public Library.

SUMMARY:In-Person\, Experiential Workshop on Active Imagination\, Presented by Maggi Colwell - View Also a Video Preview
DESCRIPTION:Here is a brief preview video with Maggi.\n \nOpportunities for engagement in art making activities will be included for this workshop.  No art “talent” is necessary.  Suggested minimum donation of $5 for material costs. Donate here. Scroll below to RSVP\, please\, so that Maggi has an idea of supplies they will need. \nJACO Board member Maggi Colwell will be leading an in-person\, experiential workshop on one of Jung’s core methods of Active Imagination and how you can incorporate active imagination for working with your dreams\, art\, and fantasies as an enriching part of your personal practice. \nThe word image and imagination come from the Latin word imago meaning “to imitate” or to form an image in the mind from a picture.  This word speaks to the roots of how humans learn\, form schemas\, and use symbols.  The imagination is the internal “image maker.”  This is the same image-maker that utilizes symbols and images in our dreams. \nIn this workshop\, Maggi\, an art therapist\, will lead an experiential process with participants to get hands-on experience with active imagination to work with your own symbols and images.  Active imagination\, as created by Carl Jung is a method for engaging with your unconscious that is outside normal rational cognitive thought.  Like light trance\, meditation\, or daydreaming\, active imagination exercises and techniques will be explored. \nThis workshop will be in person\, experiential\, and hands-on rather than lecture focused. \nMaggi Colwell\, MS\, ATR-BC recognized a deep interest for both creativity and dreams at a young age.  As a child\, they had a burning desire for painting. They found the symbolism in renaissance paintings fascinating and the strangeness of surrealism enthralling.  Maggi now considers their relationship with art-making a conversation with their soul. \nProfessionally\, Maggi received their Masters in Art Therapy from Florida State University and is a board-certified\, registered art therapist.  Maggi lives in Columbus Ohio and is the owner of Chiron Art Therapy\, where they have a private practice in art therapy. They focus on their client’s symbolism in their artwork\, dreams\, and archetypal patterns in their lives.  You can find out more from columbusarttherapy.com.

SUMMARY:Gifts of a Life Review of Your Lived and Unlived Life - Presented by Dr. Connie Zweig
DESCRIPTION:Scroll down to RSVP to receive the link to this program.\nThis zoom presentation describes the traditional life review in midlife or beyond as the ego’s life review and adds the dimension of Shadow — how to connect what was expressed with what was repressed. In this way\, the unlived life moves into awareness\, and we can reclaim some of what was sacrificed. Using an animated Power Point\, Dr. Zweig demonstrates how to review and connect our lived lives with our unlived lives\, with time built into the program for self-reflection. PLEASE BRING A LARGE PIECE OF PAPER AND PENCIL/PEN.\nConnie Zweig\, Ph.D.\, is a retired therapist and writer. Known as the Shadow Expert\, she is coauthor of Meeting the Shadow and Romancing the Shadow and author of Meeting the Shadow of Spirituality and a novel\, A Moth to the Flame: The Life of Sufi Poet Rumi. Her new bestselling book\, The Inner Work of Age: Shifting from Role to Soul\, extends her work on the Shadow into midlife and beyond and explores aging as a spiritual practice. It won both the 2021 American Book Fest Award and the 2021 Best Indie Book Award for best inspirational non-fiction. Connie has been doing contemplative practices for more than 50 years. She is a wife\, stepmother\, and grandmother. After all these roles\, she’s practicing the shift from role to soul.

SUMMARY:WHAT IS A LIFE WELL-LIVED? Jungian Reflections on “The Three Feathers” Tale Presented by Dr. Richard Sweeney
DESCRIPTION:A description of the program follows\, as well as a pointer to registration information. Here though is an interview with Dr. Sweeney about the program he is presenting. \nhttps://www.jungcentralohio.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Sweeney-intro-video-1.mp4\nThe Bauza lecture this year is dedicated to our long-time Jung Association member and recent board member\, Donice Wooster\, who passed from us in November.  In her last weeks we asked her if there was a theme or topic she would like to see presented and discussed at an upcoming program.  She spoke then of her love of fairytales and particularly the tale\, “The Three Feathers.”    We have chosen this tale as our topic\, in part because\, like many fairytales\, it suggests ways to meet life’s conflicts and challenges.  In short\, it sheds light upon “what is a life well-lived.” \nIn the lecture portion of the program Jungian psychoanalyst\, Richard Sweeney\, will discuss how fairytales portray frequent human conflicts that call for a new attitude or consciousness.  As Joseph Campbell once wrote\, they “supply the symbols that carry the human spirit forward.”  In this program we will examine the central symbols of this tale and explore their relevance for negotiating the personal and cultural conflicts confronting us today.  Some dream material and clinical examples will provide additional illustration\, and the contributions of participants will also be invited. \nRichard J. Sweeney\, Ph.D. is a Jungian psychoanalyst and a licensed professional clinical counselor in private practice in Columbus and Cincinnati. He holds a doctoral degree in psychology and religion from the Graduate Theological Union\, Berkeley and a diploma in analytical psychology from the C.G. Jung Institute\, Zurich\, where he remains a member of its international faculty wing. \nRegistration – Scroll below to tickets \n$35 for Members of the Jung Association and Partner Organizations  Partner organizations are 1) Universalist Unitarian Church; 2) First Community Church; King Avenue Methodist Church; 4) First Congregational Church.  To become a Jung Association member click here. \n$45 for Non-Members \n 3 CEU’s     $15 CEU fee for non-members   Member CEUs are free (scroll below to RSVP ticket)

SUMMARY:Raffle Tickets for Jung's The Red Book
DESCRIPTION:Donice Wooster was an angel who served JACO\, First Community Church\, First Congregational Church and Apple Farms. Her gifts to us all were legendary and sadly she died this past November. One of her treasures was a copy of Jung’s exquisite Red Book\, which she has bequeathed as a fund-raiser. She wanted someone else to marvel at it\, to hold it and behold it and she wanted it to be a means of providing an infusion of financial support to JACO. Scroll down to purchase tickets. They are $5 each (so be sure also to select the quantity you want) and for a bonus\, you can buy  a packet of 5 tickets for $20 (so be sure to indicate the number of packets you want to buy). When you purchase your ticket(s) we will email you your ticket number(s). We’ll have the drawing on April 23\, when Dr. Sweeney is presenting his Bauza program\, which pays tribute to our beloved friend.

SUMMARY:Animus – Anima: A Jungian Reset? – Presented by JACO Members Mary Marx and John Schuster
DESCRIPTION:C G Jung has been credited largely with the concept that men have an inner feminine and women have an inner masculine (i.e.\, the contrasexual self) which allows all people access to both gendered energies. The cultural limits of Jung’s life have created confusion for people working with and studying his writing for decades\, and the non-binary choices that now exist go way beyond anything Jung saw in his time. Susan Rowland’s work on Jung and gender make an important contribution here. This session is a forum for discussion of anima and animus in a contemporary context. \nMary Marx taught English classes on myth and folktales at Chatfield College. She holds master’s degrees from UC and Pacifica Graduate Institute. She is past OLLI moderator of Myth and Symbols in Mary Renault’s The King Must Die\, and Seamus Heaney’s Sweeney Astray (with R. Shanklin). \nJohn teaches leadership coaching at Columbia University. He has an MA in literature and an MA in psychology. He is co-author of The Power of Open-book Management and author of Answering Your Call: A Guide to Living Your Deepest Purpose as well as The Power of Your Past: The Art of Recalling\, Recasting\, and Reclaiming. In 2018\, John launched a podcast about aging with intention called Stories for the Ages on NPR. \n

SUMMARY:Observations on Jung\, Religion\, and Spirituality\, With Rev. David Hett
DESCRIPTION:Rev. David Hett’s December program was so outstanding that the participants importuned him to present a follow-on. His material was so rich\, deeply informed by diverse scholarly resources\, that he said he easily could offer us more. He truly held everyone spellbound with his knowledge\, humor\, and engaging personality. Because we are unable to bring Dr. Fanny Brewster and Dr\, Karen Naifeh in January as hoped\, we have scheduled David for the January Second Saturday. It will be a free program\, though the omicron variant of covid has necessitated its being a Zoom delivery. Thus it’s really important for you to RSVP (scroll down) in order to receive your zoom link. In order to get the link in time\, RSVP NO LATER THAN 9 AM SATURDAY JANUARY 8. \nThe C. G. Jung Association of Central Ohio (JACO) grew initially out of depth psychology groups begun at First Community some 40 years ago. We have asked Rev. David Hett\, Dean of The Burkhart Center\, to present the January “Second Saturday” program\, on the topic of Carl Jung’s (and followers) perspectives on religion and spirituality. Dr. Jung was the son and grandson of Protestant ministers and so brings much perspective on Christianity into his psychological work\, as one of the preeminent founders of the depth psychology movement in the 20th century. \nRev. Hett\, clergy member of First Community\, has been a student of depth psychologist Carl Jung\, and served for years on the JACO board of directors\, and will bring his own insights into the interplay of Jungian thought and practice with Christian religious concepts particularly. With no claims to be an expert on Jungian psychology\, he will\, with his more extensive background in psychological-spiritual work\, present observations on spirituality\, psychology\, and practice that foster personal growth and integration of personality and essence\, of the human with the divine qualities of our true nature. \n

SUMMARY:Understanding Self and Others Through Carl Jung's Theory of Psychological Types\, Presented by Stephen Weed
DESCRIPTION:This is a free JACO Second Saturday Program. More Please RSVP below to receive a zoom link. Click here for a preview. \nCarl Jung’s theory of Psychological Type posits that each of us has a preferred primary or principal mental function that focuses and filters our understanding of the world.  In this workshop\, we will examine the 6 basic components that comprise this dominant mental function and give structure to each of his 8 psychological types. \nJung’s first distinction is between the two Attitude-Types of the Extraverted Type and the Introverted Type as a function of whether one’s energy is drawn to engage with objects in the outer world (Extraverted)\, or whether one’s energy tends to withdraw or disengage from objects in the objective world and focus on the inward\, subjective impression within ourselves (Introverted). \nOnce we’ve established our preferred Attitude-Types\, we will examine Jung’s descriptions of the four Function-Types – Thinking\, Feeling\, Sensation\, and Intuition – and discuss how we may resonate with and employ each in everyday situations.  Then we will look at how each of these Function-Types combines with each of the Attitude-Types to create 8 distinctive conscious orientations that characterize separate psychological types when differentiated into a dominant or principal function. \nLastly\, in conversation as a group\, we will share experiences and insights and develop some takeaway points for each of Jung’s 8 dominant functions. \nStephen T. Weed MS is a member of the C.G. Jung Association of Central Ohio and has presented on Jung’s Theory of Psychological Types at several Second Saturday gatherings since 2013.  Stephen is a certified MBTI Master Practitioner and has worked with clients and students employing the 16 Myers-Briggs Personality Types in individual and small-group settings since 1996. \nAs a founding member of the teaching team at Relational Care Associates\, LLC\, Stephen created and facilitated personality type workshops consisting of 18 weeks of introductory\, intermediate\, and advanced level courses\, including topics such as: Jungian Functions and Personality Type; Beebe’s Jungian Archetypes and Psychological Type; Emotional Intelligence; and David Keirsey’s Temperament Theory. \nStephen has worked or volunteered with a number of local non-profit organizations over the past 20 years\, including the Friends of WOSU Public Media\, Short North SID\, St. Joseph Montessori School\, CCAD\, and the Susan Scherer Charitable Foundation.  He is currently a board member with JACO and with North Central Mental Health Services.

SUMMARY:Bollingen Workshop: Human Dilemmas and the Everyday Truths of Folk Tales
DESCRIPTION:rosenbarger flier 3\n \nAccording to the renowned Jungian analyst and scholar\, Marie Louise von Franz\, “since fairy tales through the world disclose certain common themes and structures\, we may assume that they spring from the most universal substrate of the human psyche.”  It is for this reason that fairy and folk tales portray frequent human dilemmas\, the situations that give rise to them\, and paths toward their resolution.  Faced as we are at this time in our lives with serious personal\, cultural and global conflicts\, the everyday truths of fairy tales can offer us much needed wisdom and guidance.  In this weekend program we will rely upon some of these tales to focus our attention on the archetypal or universal patterns\, symbols and energies that are emerging today.  Our hope is that this access to the symbolic meaning of folk tales will enable us to participate in a more conscious and responsible way in our personal and cultural lives.  Hopefully\, it will also illustrate the usefulness of a symbolic\, psychodynamic view of these tales for psychotherapeutic work.\n In our Saturday workshop we will discuss a western tale that again shows us a typical mundane problem and how a heroine finds her way to survival and homecoming after her journey through a magical realm. In effect\, we will be probing the often subtle challenges that present themselves to us in initially unseen ways.   There will be time for discussion and exploration of the symbols and development in this tale\, with special focus on where we see these same patterns in our current everyday lives. \nMara-Lea Rosenbarger is a Jungian Analyst\, with the Diploma from The C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich. She has a private practice in Bloomington\, IN and conducts on-going reading groups studying the works of Jung and Marie Louise von Franz as well as other writers\, including modern novels. She has spent many years working in the public schools as an elementary teacher\, a Reading Specialist\, and as an Instructional and Literacy Coach. She is currently an Adjunct Faculty member at Indiana University in The School of Education. She is particularly interested in modern and not so modern fiction and how these writers revive and re-enliven the universal patterns that are so efficiently and elementally expressed in folk tales\, making this great body of \nhuman experience accessible to so many of us in so many ways.
