One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light\, but by making the darkness conscious.”  Carl Jung\, Psychology and Alchemy          It is the stranger who knocks on the door.  Its terrifying features are proportionate to the degree to which its meaning has been exiled\, and we are frightened because we know that its entrance and effects on our life will create a psychic dis-equilibrium.  So we wash our hands\, lock the doors\, and do whatever is possible to keep these contents far away from our life — or so goes the illusion. The stranger\, this creative unconscious\, will not be silenced or muted by conscious intent. Ultimately\, the unconscious will have its say\, because The Self understands that we cannot live a meaningful life with such vital aspects of Psyche in exile. Welcoming the stranger is an important feature both in psychological development and in the treatment of trauma. We need to know the stranger at the door\, and often are surprised to learn its identity. From myth\, fairy tale\, and opera we hear of these life altering encounters with Self\, which allow us to recognize the painful reality of how our traumas and fears have constrained our life\, while also asking what is needed to move beyond the contours of our possessions. \nDr. Michael Conforti is a Jungian analyst and the Founder and Director of the Assisi Institute. He is a faculty member at the C.G. Jung Institute – Boston\, the C.G Jung Foundation of New York\, and for many years served as a Senior Associate faculty member in the Doctoral and Master’s Programs in Clinical Psychology at Antioch New England. A pioneer in the field of matter-psyche studies\, Dr. Conforti is actively investigating the workings of archetypal fields and the relationship between Jungian psychology and the New Sciences. He has presented his work to a wide range of national and international audiences\, including the C.G. Jung Institute – Zurich and Jungian organizations in Australia\, Canada\, Colombia\, Denmark\, Ecuador\, Italy\, Russia\, Switzerland\, and Venezuela. He is the author of Threshold Experiences: The Archetype of Beginnings (2007) and Field\, Form and Fate: Patterns in Mind\, Nature and Psyche (2002). Reminding us of the transformative potential of fairy tales\, this beautiful and difficult story illustrates how even when so many of us forget the reality of a living spirit\, the numinous is ever present; indeed\, the psyche and the divine are embedded within the world’s religious and spiritual traditions.  The movie entitled “The Miracle of Marcelino” is based on this story. The Enneagram is a map of personality types and a dynamic description of how personality develops. The name\, Enneagram\, has its origin in the Greek words “ennea” related to nine and gram meaning “a model.” The Enneagram symbol is a circle with nine equidistant points around the circumference.  These points identify nine personality type structures that are archetypal\, relevant to all people. Dr. Gore discussed the enneagram types as nine ways of balancing the three Centers of Intelligence from Gurdjieff’s teaching: the Belly or Moving Center\, the Heart or Feeling Center\, and the Head or Thinking Center. \nBelinda’s focus is teaching and guiding practices for living the awakened life.  In coaching\, workshops\, and yearlong trainings her work brings together the Enneagram\, the practice of Presence\, Ancient Ritual Postures\, and art as an expression of the personal and collective spiritual journey. Belinda is an inspired teacher as well as a psychologist\, a coach\, and an artist.  The basis of her spiritual teaching is a practice that uses ancient ritual postures from the artwork of indigenous people around the world to access the world of spirit.  It is the subject of two of her books and much of her art.  She is also an expert in the Enneagram\, teaching workshops internationally and virtual courses online.   Her area of special interest is the development of personality through relationships as understood through Object Relations theory.  Belinda is also a partner and senior faculty with The Deep Coaching Institute\, a coaching school that trains coaches to use the Enneagram and a methodology based on somatic awareness and deep acceptance.  The Deep Coaching approach guides clients in becoming more present and thereby experiencing Presence\, the basis of the awakened life. \nBelinda Gore Enneagram Slides \n

DESCRIPTION:We are sorry but registration for this program has closed. \n“Always when science tries to describe a “simple” life process\, the matter becomes complicated and difficult.” —C.G. Jung \nTechnologies have become “necessary” tools for ego development (for individuals\, companies\, organizations\, or institutions) by mirroring needs and desires in order to feel known and remembered. And very few of us reside outside the realm of this powerful influence. So\, what are we to make of this process by which the ego and its attendant aspirations become drawn into such a powerful archetypal force? We continuously hear about or experience the benefits and the ease of locating information and communicating with others. What is missing\, however\, is a dialogue about technology as shadow. \nThere is no doubt our lives are enhanced by powerful emerging technologies and that these developments reflect a level of influence consistent with archetypal meaning. Unless we become conscious of the shadow working within the uses of our technological wonders\, we will grow increasingly estranged in our relationships with our selves\, each other\, and the psyche. A preoccupation with technology and its effects on consciousness will result in an unconscious undertow of sorts—dragging us out to sea\, into a reckoning with the psyche’s intentions. \nDr. Tyler practices as a Jungian Analyst in Knoxville\, TN. He obtained his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee and his diploma in Analytical Psychology from the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts (IRSJA). He is a member of the IRSJA and is currently a training analyst with the Inter-Regional Memphis-Atlanta Seminar. Dr. Tyler has been a practicing psychologist for 25 years in Knoxville and lectures on various Jungian topics\, including: Typology\, the Holy Grail\, the Hero archetype\, the intersection of psychology and theology\, and Merlin as multifaceted archetypal images.

DESCRIPTION:There is no charge for this program but please email jungaco@jungcentralohio.org by August 20 so that we can get back in touch with you to provide the zoom link to participate. \nHow can we who identify as White learn to recognize the myriad things we do – often unconsciously – that are offensive to people of African heritage\, Native Americans\, and other People of Color.  As members of the dominant group in our society we have learned not to see embedded forms of racism and oppression in our attitudes\, conversation\, and general behavior. In order to make lasting change\, we are challenged to understand what forces keep unconscious racial bias alive and active. One answer lies in the concept of a Cultural Shadow\, in this case the White Shadow in American society. \nThis presentation by Dr. Naifeh will draw on writings of Jung and post-Jungian writers such as Kimbles\, Singer and Brewster\, as well as examples from philosophy\, relational psychoanalysis\, film and literature to depict the Cultural Shadow.  In one of his 1925 lectures Jung diagrammed the geology of the personality.  Post-Jungian writers have connected the Cultural Shadow with archetypal evil and the formation of negative cultural complexes.  An  exploration of this powerful connection can lead us to new ways of understanding how the sense of Other is created and maintained in the psyche\, thereby revealing ways for us to bring the Cultural Shadow into consciousness. \nDr. Naifeh’s talk will include dialogue about how to recognize how the Cultural Shadow impacts us personally and practical ways to deal with it. \nDr. Naifeh is co-chair of the ad hoc Committee on Diversity and Inclusivity and an analyst member of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco. She holds doctorate degrees in medical physiology and in clinical psychology. She teaches candidates in the GCJISF’s analytic training program and clinic internship program and supervises doctoral interns in the Institute Clinic. Jung Collected Works\, Vol. 10\, para 963 \nWhen we open the door of Jungian psychology\, crossing the threshold to meet our racial complexes\, the best way to proceed is gently. As our collective engages and struggles with issues of mortality\, violence and racial relations\, we are all affected in the most profound ways.  Talking with one another\, the hallmark of depth psychology\, has always been a path to considerations of healing and wholeness.  It can also teach us more about compassion as we begin to understand the human narrative of those we consider “Other”.  Let us talk to one another in a way that opens our hearts\, our deeper selves connected to personal racial complexes\, and archetypal energies. Let us spend time together investigating what we desire to learn\, engaging our ego and our unconscious shadowed selves\, and releasing our fears in service of deepening consciousness. \nDr. Brewster is a Jungian analyst and Professor of Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute.  She is a writer of nonfiction including African Americans and Jungian Psychology: Leaving the Shadows ((Routledge\, 2017)\, Archetypal Grief:  Slavery’s Legacy of Intergenerational Child Loss (Routledge\, 2018) and The Racial Complex:  A Jungian Perspective on Culture and Race. (Routledge\, 2019) Her poems have been published in Psychological Perspectives Journal where she was the Featured Poet as well as in other journals. Dr. Brewster is a lecturer and workshop presenter on Jungian related topics that address American Culture\, Diversity and Creativity.  She is a faculty member at the New York C.G. Jung Foundation and an analyst member with the Philadelphia Association of Jungian Analysts. She has received two Gradiva Award nominations for her writing from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis.
