Maggie Colwell

Maggi received their bachelor's in visual art from Salisbury University in 2003. After undergraduate, Maggi trained with the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel, for 12 years, receiving their 3rd degree as high priestex in 2011. Their studies have included ceremonial magic, hermetic Qabala, tarot, mythology, and astrology. They offer teaching in arts-based rituals and metaphysics at www.artscoven.com

Maggi received their master's in art therapy from Florida State University and is a board-certified art therapist. They have a master's level Dream Pattern Certificate from the Assisi Institute.

Maggi moved to Columbus Ohio in 2020 and works with individual adults in their Jungian-oriented, private practice, Chiron Art Therapy, at columbusarttherapy.com

Artist’s Statement

I consider artmaking a conversation with my soul.  I show up to the blank page or the canvas to get more in touch with what’s going on within me.  When I start working on paintings, I work in an intuitive style, abstractly, choosing colors and marks based on how I feel.  I ask myself the question, “what do I see?”  I also sit with what may be stirring within me in response to the art.  What is the art or the process telling me about myself?

In the past 18 months, I have incorporated a brighter color palette into my work utilizing florescent paint which seems to reflect a more playful, aligned energy in my life. I found that when the art is completed, another image is revealed under blacklight. Because I do not work in blacklight, these images cannot be seen during the painting process. My mentor, and Jungian Analyst, Muriel McMahon responded to my work, stating it was the unconscious revealed. An apropos name for the process and body of work.
